If you’re looking for a truly expedition-style ship for your Antarctic or Arctic adventure, look no further than the sister ships Professor Molchanov, Professor Multanovskiy and Akademik Shokalskiy.Professor Multanovskiy

Though these ships are relatively small in size compared with other vessels used for Arctic and Antarctic cruises, many of our clients have come to prefer them over larger ships—and for some compelling reasons.

With fewer passengers aboard—a maximum of 52 per ship—shore excursions are more manageable. Getting people to and from shore is streamlined and efficient. And, once ashore, individuals are able to enjoy more “space” to explore wildlife and other attractions. Filling your camera frame with wildlife—rather than fellow passengers—is infinitely easier, making these ships a top choice for photography and video enthusiasts.

In the post-trip evaluations we receive from clients, it’s very common for them to comment positively on the level of camaraderie these small ships foster. With fewer travelers aboard, you tend to get to know one another sooner and establish common interests and friendships quickly. We have long been fans of the Molchanov, Multanovskiy and Shokalskiy for the pleasant, welcoming atmosphere found on board.Dining room on Professor Multanovskiy

One additional advantage of the small ships is access to the expedition staff. The client-to-leader ratio on these ships is often lower than on the bigger ships. Onboard the ship and during shore excursions, your leader is always close by to answer questions and help make your trip as enjoyable as possible.

All three of these vessels were originally built as oceanographic and hydrographic research ships with ice-strengthened hulls to enable them to work in polar seas. Converted for passenger cruising in the 1990s, the ships are well-suited to the adventure travel industry. Each carries an enthusiastic Russian crew of about 20, with captains who are recognized as experts in ice navigation.

In addition to the crew, there is an Expedition Leader and several lecturer/naturalists who plan the daily activities and accompany passengers ashore to interpret the natural history and ensure everyone’s safety. Additionally, each ship has a doctor, hotel manager/bartender and European chefs. The entire staff is dedicated to making Bridge of the Professor Multanovskiyyour trip safe, comfortable and memorable.

Cabin interiors are basic, yet very comfortable and clean. You can choose from several cabin categories offering private or shared facilities and a variety of berth configurations (upper/lower, lower/lower, etc.). All cabins are outside with portholes or windows, desks, wash basins and plenty of storage space for your belongings.

The bridges on these vessels offer ample space where passengers are welcome to observe ship operations and wildlife first-hand. There are times the bridge will be closed for safety of navigation, but will usually remain open throughout the day and evening. There are good viewing spaces on deck where you can set up a camera tripod, watch for wildlife or simply take in the scenery. The bow and stern are open to passengers under good sea conditions.
